Birth Comb - Natural Labour Support
Portable, convenient, discreet, and completely drug-free, the Birth Comb is a simple yet effective labour support tool designed to help you stay focused and in control during birth. Small enough to fit in your pocket or hospital bag, it's ready whenever you need it throughout labour.
How Does It Work?
The Birth Comb is based on the Gate Control Theory of pain, which suggests that non-painful sensations can help reduce the perception of pain by competing with pain signals travelling to the brain.
During labour, squeezing the comb firmly in your hand creates a strong sensory input through the comb's teeth. This gives your brain an alternative sensation to focus on, helping to distract from contraction intensity and support your coping techniques during labour.
The comb's teeth also stimulate the Lao Gong (Pericardium 8) acupressure point, located in the centre of the palm where the tip of your middle finger naturally rests when making a fist. In traditional acupressure practices, this point is associated with calming the mind, reducing feelings of anxiety, and encouraging relaxation.
Small, lightweight, and easy to use, the Birth Comb can be used at home, in hospital, or in a birth pool. After birth, it may also be used as a grounding tool during times of stress or discomfort.
How To Use
- Remove the comb from its storage case.
- Hold the comb in your palm with the teeth pressing into the centre of your hand.
- During contractions, squeeze the comb firmly to create a focused sensory distraction.
- Alternate hands periodically for comfort during longer labours.
- Suitable for use in the shower or birth pool, unlike many electronic pain relief options.
Important Safety Information
As the Lao Gong acupressure point is traditionally associated with stimulating labour, we recommend using the Birth Comb only once labour has begun or after 37 weeks of pregnancy.
The Birth Comb is designed as a comfort measure and should not be considered a replacement for professional medical advice or pain management options recommended by your healthcare provider.
