Didn't Realise I was in Labour

Lisa shares the story of her daughters birth

________________________

I went into spontaneous labour at 36 weeks 6 days pregnant.

My first contractions started around 4 pm on the Monday evening. They were about half an hour apart at this stage, but I didn't realise that I was in labour as the pains felt NOTHING like I assumed they would.

I was told they were like period pains, but for me, they were a bit different. I assumed I had picked up a tummy bug.

Throughout the night they woke me up about every 1/2 hour and I would sleep between them. At around 4am I woke my husband up and said "I'm not sure but I think I might be in labour" as the pains were too regular and were getting quite painful and closer and closer together.

At 6am we made a trip to the hospital where I was hooked up to the baby monitor and the midwives told me that I was definitely having contractions but that they were more than likely braxton hicks as I wasn't due for another 3 weeks.

I decided to go home at around 7am where my labour progressed quite steadily. I spent most of this time at home in my rocking chair which I found made the pain alot more bearable and I have since found, can assist in speeding things up.

I was at home until 11am when I felt definitely ready for some pain relief! At this time my contractions were around 2 minutes apart. I walked into the maternity ward of our hospital, said "HELP ME" to the nearest midwife  and got hooked up to some glorious gas.

The midwife gave me an internal examination and said that I was 9cm dilated at this time and just over an hour later, at 12:08 pm, I delivered a beautiful 6 pound baby girl after around 15 minutes of pushing (no stitches yay).

I found childbirth to be the most exhilerating, terrifying, exciting, amazing experience ever.

The image of my beautiful little girl being lifted from my body and onto my chest is burned into my mind. It was my first glimpse of that gorgeous creature and I will never forget it :) We are currently trying for baby number 2 and I cannot wait to do it all over again!
